Helping a Shy Rescue Dog
Gentle ways to support a cautious rescue dog without pushing too fast.
Let the dog choose distance
A shy dog should not be pulled into contact. Sit nearby, avoid staring and let the dog approach when ready. Quiet presence builds trust better than repeated calling or touching.
Use food thoughtfully
Place treats on the floor or offer them from an open hand if the dog is comfortable. Food can create positive associations, but it should never be used to lure a frightened dog into a situation they cannot leave.
Build tiny successes
Reward small moments such as looking at you, taking a step forward or relaxing on a bed. Short, successful sessions are better than long training attempts. End before the dog becomes overwhelmed.
Keep safety equipment consistent
For outdoor walks, use secure equipment and avoid busy areas at first. A startled rescue dog may try to back out of a harness or run from sudden noise, so calm routes and double safety are important.
